During the 2014 electoral register campaign period and prior to the General Election in May 2015 we were asked to encourage ITR confirmations by traditional canvassing techniques for a number of local Authorities and this proved to be very successful for all concerned. We provide a full ‘knock, encourage and delivery’ service for outstanding ITR’s and matching this up with chasing outstanding HEF’s in the same polling districts works extremely effectively. Since then we have incorporated ITR canvassing within our HEF campaigns as well as canvassing solely outstanding ITR’s when requested to do so.
We do find that many people tend to put such letters to one side assuming they are already registered and have no need to respond to the letter and the encouragement that we give to return the form on our visits substantially increases the number of voters on your Electoral Register.
We actively encourage Authorities to consider canvassing HEF and ITR completion outside of the normal canvassing period. This enables us to carry out the work in better weather and light nights which is a time when more or less every home is occupied and one where it is difficult to get people to answer in the winter Months. The enhanced response rate by working during the summer is remarkable and can save Local Authorities considerable sums in maintaining their Register. Between January and April 2017 we followed up on 6000 outstanding ITR’s for one Local Authority and found this to be very effective and worthwhile for the Authority concerned.
Government guidelines also encourage maintenance and updates to the Register throughout the year rather than solely at the annual canvas.
Verification of non matched data on ITR’s is an ongoing project and it is essential that this data is matched as quickly as possible to ensure an accurate register. The way to ensure this is by employing Data Tracking to knock at addresses where outstanding ITR’s are recorded and encourage submission
